Based on the principle that all children deserve the same opportunity, Friendly School Mutual Aid (E.S.A) has been mentoring children from first grade through high school in academic difficulty from disadvantaged families for over 50 years. The goal is to guide them toward success and independence. Each year, E.S.A mentors more than 4,000 children and young people throughout France thanks to the commitment of its 3,900 volunteers. Working professionals, retirees, students, or teenagers all share the same desire to pass on knowledge and actively work for equal opportunities. To do this, E.S.A supports children in their academic journey and in discovering the world around them; but also works with families, helping parents become involved in their child's education and facilitating parent-school relationships. At least once a week, the volunteer and child meet at the child's home, with the child's parents, to work on their difficulties. E.S.A's action is rooted in the neighborhood, with community-based mentoring, complementary to school and in synergy with other socio-educational actors, promoting social cohesion and living together.
