La Société Protectrice des Animaux (SPA) est la première association de protection animale en France. Elle a été créée en 1845 et reconnue d’utilité publique en 1860. La SPA agit quotidiennement pour assurer la protection et la défense des animaux sur l'ensemble du territoire. Ses missions consistent à : Lutter contre la maltraitance et les abandons ; Recueillir et héberger les animaux abandonnés, perdus ou maltraités et leur trouver un foyer ; Soigner les animaux des propriétaires démunis ; Sensibiliser le grand public et en particulier les jeunes à la protection animale ; Responsabiliser les propriétaires d'animaux ; S'engager auprès des pouvoirs publics pour faire évoluer la cause animale. La SPA agit grâce à : 338 000 donateurs fidèles ; 17 700 adhérents ; 817 salariés ; 6 197 bénévoles ; 4 Inspecteurs et 1 100 Délégués-enquêteurs ; 63 refuges et Maisons SPA partout en France pour accueillir les animaux et renseigner le grand public (dont le Grand Refuge pour les équidés) ; 12 dispensaires pour soigner les animaux des propriétaires démunis ; Une Cellule Anti-Trafic pour démanteler les élevages clandestins ; 42 Clubs Jeunes pour sensibiliser les adolescents à la protection…
