The ANVP brings together prison visitors who visit people in detention and accompanying visitors who meet and assist those sentenced to open-ended penalties (electronic monitoring, probationary sentences, external placement, etc.). Because human beings are fundamentally built through exchange, fraternity and solidarity, providing them with a space to listen and be heard is, for some, their first access to dignity. No one can escape delinquency without benevolent acceptance by society. Visitors are a vital component of this. The ANVP's historical activity is visiting people in detention. There are approximately 70,000 people in detention in France. Many of them are extremely isolated. For the people visited who often have no other visits from people outside, it is an opportunity to exchange in complete confidence. Volunteers provide listening and support. It is also an opportunity for detained people to maintain contact with civil society and to have a window open to the outside world.
