The National Office for War Veterans and War Victims (ONACVG) is a public institution under the supervision of the Ministry of Armed Forces. It has legal personality, financial autonomy, and is managed by a board of directors placed under the supervision of the State Secretary to the Minister of Armed Forces, currently Ms. Geneviève Darrieussecq. The first office was created in 1916, in the midst of the First World War. A century later, the ONACVG continues to provide moral and material support to nearly 1.6 million nationals. In total, there are currently 22 categories of nationals, the main ones being war veterans, war widows, harkis, war orphans and wards of the nation, and victims of terrorist attacks. The public institution is committed to preserving the unique and privileged relationship it maintains with the veteran community and operates in three areas of activity: Recognition and reparation, Solidarity, and Memory. Since 1991, the ONACVG has also managed the National Cornflower of France Foundation.
