To contribute to the social autonomy of immigrant adults, both men and women, particularly through improved mastery of spoken and written French. In 1963, following their country's independence, Algerian activists wished to contribute to the training of their compatriots who had emigrated to France by tackling the fundamental problem: illiteracy. Together with French friends, they created GERMAE for this purpose and set up evening classes run by volunteer instructors. Subsequently, taking into account the evolution of immigration and changing needs, these activities diversified: today they welcome men and women from different countries who had little or no schooling in their childhood, or who have an educational background but are not French speakers. Today GERMAE carries out activities in seven locations in the Île-de-France region.
